Social network sites as self-portraiture

Larry Friedlander, in his article “Friending the Virgin: Some Thoughts on the Prehistory of Facebook” considers social network sites in terms of historical traditions of self-portraiture in art. The full text and pdf are available as open access, and there’s even a podcast version.
